Membrane Probes

Ursa Bioscience offers a range of highly fluorescent and phosphorescent membrane probes with differing water solubility’s, excitation /emission wavelengths and lifetimes.

Membrane Blue 1-4™ Fluorescent Probes

Our Membrane Blue™ range of probes, have a cationic water soluble fluorescent head-group, with a different hydrophobic chains, ideal for membrane insertion. Figure 1 below shows a typical absorption spectrum for the membrane blue probes, with absorption bands at 320 nm (S2) and 350 nm (S1) and a strong fluorescence emission centered ~ 440 nm in the blue. The mean lifetime is approximately 16 ns for all 4 probes. The Stern-Volmer quenching constants for all 4 probes for aqueous chloride ions ~ 100 M-1.

Phos Membrane 1-4™ Phosphorescent Probes

Our Phos Membrane™ range of probes have a cationic water soluble phosphorescent head group, with different hydrophobic chains, ideal for lipid/membrane insertion and imaging. Figure 2 shows a typical absorption spectrum for the Phos Membrane™ probes, which all can readily be excited from 300-350 nm.

The fluorescence (S1) of the Phos Membrane™ probes is weaker than the phosphorescence (T1) when immobilized. The fluorescence is centered around 390 nm, whereas the Phosphorescence is centered around 540 nm.

The Phosphorescence lifetime for all the probes is ~ 175 µS, substantially longer than our Membrane Blue™ fluorescent probes, which have a fluorescence (S1) lifetime of ~ 16 ns.
